The United Nations-led multilateral framework is facing a credibility crisis. Multilateral institutions have struggled to address critical challenges such as inter-state conflict, climate change, pandemics, and debt crises. This failure is exacerbated by the lack of representation for emerging economies in key institutions like the UN Security Council, as well as the crisis within the World Trade Organisation, which has been unable to establish a more equitable global trading system for the Global South. As the global governance structure falters amid shifting geopolitical realities, India has championed the concept of ‘reformed multilateralism,’ aiming to reshape institutions to be more effective, inclusive, and responsive to global needs. The inclusion of the African Union in the G20 during India’s 2023 presidency exemplified India’s commitment to advancing the Global South’s interests and ensuring the continued relevance of global governance. What reforms are necessary to enhance the effectiveness of multilateral institutions in tackling global challenges? How can the voices of developing countries be amplified in global decision-making? What steps India can initiate to foster agility and adaptability within multilateral institutions, enabling them to respond more effectively to the evolving geopolitical landscape?
