One of my favorite songs from 1968, a song written by Shel Silverstein, who also wrote books such as "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "The Giving Tree." The song was made famous by the Irish Rovers, and I couldn't help trying a bit of Irish accent, although I'd be the first to admit I'm not good at it. intro: [ C G7 – C ] A [C] long time ago when the [G7] earth was green There was more kinds of animals than [C] you’d ever seen They’d run around [C7] free, while the [F] earth was being born but the [C] loveliest of them all was the [G7] uni[C]corn There was [C] green alligators and [G7] long-neck geese Some humpty-back camels and some [C] chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants but [F] sure as you’re born The [C] loveliest of all was the [G7] uni[C]corn [ C G7 – C ] Now [C] God seen some sinning, and it [G7] gave Him pain And He said, “Stand back! I’m gonna [C] make it rain!” He said, “Hey Brother [C7] Noah, I [F] tell you what to do— [C] Build me a [G7] floating [C] zoo, and take some of them [C] Green alligators and [G7] long-neck geese Some humpty-back camels and some [C] chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants but [F] sure as you’re born [C] Don’t you forget my [G7] uni[C]corn!” [ C G7 – C ] Old [C] Noah was there to [G7] answer the call He finished up making the ark just as the [C] rain started falling He marched in the [C7] animals [F] two by two and he [C] called out as [G7] they went [C] through, “Hey Lord! I got your [C] green alligators and [G7] long-neck geese Some humpty-back camels and some [C] chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants but [F] Lord, I’m so forlorn I [C] just can’t see no [G7] uni[C]corn [ C G7 – C ] Then [C] Noah looked out through the [G7] driving rain Them unicorns were hiding, [C] playing silly games Kicking and [C7] splashing, while the [F] rain was pouring [C] All them silly [G7] uni[C] corns There was [C] green alligators and [G7] long-necked geese Some humpty back camels & some [C] chimpanzees Noah cried, “Close the [C7] door, ‘cause the [F] rain is pouring And [C] we just can’t wait for [G7] those uni[C]corns [ C G7 - C ] The [C] ark started moving, it [G7] drifted with the tide Them unicorns looked up from the [C] rocks and they cried And the waters came [C7] down and sort of [F-] floated them away (spoken) And that’s why you never seen a unicorn to this very day You’ll see [C] green alligators and [G7] long-neck geese Some humpty-back camels and some [C] chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but [F] sure as you’re born you’re [C] never gonna see no [G7] u-- ni-- [C] corn [G7 – C]
