Well, it's also a cross of 2 different breeds except there's one difference. Often in cross breed the unfavorable traits combine together resulting in risk of developing few weaknesses and disorders. Whereas with designer breeds it's different, 2 breeds who's traits are known to get along really well are bred to create designer breeds which has positive features of two separate dog breeds and often they are even healthier than pure breed. some of the most popular designer breeds are labradoodle which labrador and poodle, puggle which is pug and beagle and my favorite yorkiepoo which is yorkie and poodle. Now since these designers breeds are crosses of 2 different breeds.. there would be some variations as the breed can take on certain aspect from each parent, like it can pick the color from either of the parent, the size or any other characteristic. There's always an aspect of unpredictability, which is the reason why most people prefer to go for pure breeds, to know exactly what to expect from the dog in terms of appearance or behavior.
