Quindaro is known as a neighborhood area and a boulevard but it was first a town named for Nancy Brown Guthrie whose Indian name is Quindaro. Quindaro is a Wyandot Indian word meaning a bundle of sticks which is interpreted as strength in union. The town of Quindaro first began being constructed in 1857 and served as a free-state port of entry into Kansas territory for a brief time. The people there abandoned the town a few years later which led to the town falling to ruins. Today the Quindaro Ruins is an historical Landmark and can be viewed from an overlook at 3507 N 27th Street in Kansas City, Kansas (straight down N 27th St). Quindaro was also a stop on the Underground Railroad.
