An event totally overshadowed by the Mainline HST farewell the day before. The May 2019 timetable change saw the long awaited implementation of 5 car Class 800/Class 802 ‘IET’s begin operations on the London Paddington - Bedwyn hourly services, replacing 2/3 car ‘Turbo’ DMU units which are due to be cascaded to the Bristol region. On Sunday 19/05/2019 GWR 800017 held the prestigious honour of working 1K42 09:03 London Paddington - Bedwyn, the first of its class to operate such working. We board the service at Newbury, and travel down to Bedwyn before rejoining the train for its up working to the capital as 1K49 10:54 Bedwyn - London Paddington, again the first time for the class. You can see the recently extended reversing sidings at Bedwyn to accommodate the new longer trains as they change direction to head back into London. The Bi-Mode feature of the IETs is utilised on this journey, running on diesel mode for the unelectrified section between Bedwyn and Newbury, before switching to electric at Newbury for the rest of the journey into London Paddington (the acceleration of these trains is far superior on electric mode, as can be expected). The introduction of these new trains will bring huge advantages over their Turbo predecessor, with better acceleration, higher top speed and added capacity.
