When I say the Priestly Covenant, I am referring to the promise God made with Phinehas. If you don’t know who Phinehas is, we need to turn back to Numbers 25. A Moabite leader, named, Balak, hired Balaam, who was a prophet, to curse the Israelites (Numbers 24). However, whenever Balaam tried to curse Israel, God had put words in his mouth of blessing for Israel instead of curses. Having failed to curse Israel, Balaam left for his own country and God protected Israel. Now, there is a connection between the story of Balaam and what is happening in Numbers 25. Later, Moses said that Israel rebelled against God, which caused a plague to break out, because of Balaam’s advice (Numbers 31:16). So, what did Israel do to cause a plague to break out? We see that the men of Israel started to sleep with Moabite women. How did this event lead to God giving a promise to Phinehas? I'll explain how so in this video.
