Founded in 2013, the Jesuit Refugee Service Recreation Program in Maban, South Sudan, looks like many other services in the area: Young boys and girls, ages 9-18, in motion and playing in the local community center. Yet, peer further and you’ll witness a life-changing practice of martial arts and acrobats instruction: Discipline, teamwork, and physical challenge all synchronize into one group effort run by instructor, Isaac Auyub. Born in Brunei, a small town in Sudan, Isaac was forced to flee his home and resettled in Maban, South Sudan. Over the past two years, he became the lead instructor in many recreation activities, including volleyball and the Youth Support Group. He studied martial arts for three years at the World Mission School in Ethiopia. Today he supports over 250 boys and girls to study, learn, and express themselves through physical acrobats. “I’ve seen them become strong and becoming trainers. They have even been helping me! They have grown their skills by building relationships and even friendships,” he says. “The importance of sport means that they develop strong, flexible bodies and make for unity,” Issac says. “When they come to practice here, they don’t waste their time to go drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.” He wants all his students to have respect for others, to have competence and build trust among themselves and among their peers. Ultimately, each one of his students will become a leader in their own right.
