Patina cymbal test #1. Patina is the discoloration of the natural bronze color of a cymbal - either by natural means (aging) or artificial. Most of the time it is the result of oxidation. There is a lot of debate about whether or not a patina changes the sound of a cymbal. Some believe that it will dampen high frequencies in the cymbal, others don't. This is the first of a number of tests I plan to do on the subject. It is by no means conclusive but it's a good starting point. Obviously there could be quite different results depending on the kind of patina and how heavy it is - whether it's natural or induced, how much dirt and oil is present, etc, etc. Have a listen and let me know what you think in the comments. When/if I receive 10 comments I will let you know what I think - having played the cymbal in person. Note - in the video I refer to the signal chain used to record as "scientific". That's the wrong word - a better description would be "very high-quality" - the industry standard for record-making since the late '60s (Neumann Mic - Neve Mic Pre).
