Is this the same as table salt? The short answer is no. Most people have never thought about it, but there are many different types of salt. When our doctors speak of salt, or sodium, our minds automatically think of common table salt (Sodium chloride) and why wouldn't we? We wouldn't eat epsom salts or the road salt used to melt snow in the winter. So, why a different kind of salt? As discussed earlier, common table salt is made up of chlorine and sodium atoms. The salt that should be used in hot tubs is sodium bromide. Why, you ask? Both salts contain Sodium however one contains chlorine atoms and the other contains Bromine atoms. It was discovered that chlorine is affected by temperatures over 92 degrees and Bromine is not. They are both effective sanitizers fro water, however Bromine is more effective over a wider range of PH than chlorine at hot tub temperatures. That is why in salt water hot tubs, although they still employ a sodium base, bromine is more desirable. So there you have it, salt water hot tubs actually employ the close cousin of common table salt. If I choose salt does that mean I will never need to use chlorine or bromine? Not really. What it does mean is that you will no longer need to use or fill your chlorine or bromine floater with those annoying pucks any more. The bromine generators used in hot tubs convert the bromine salt into pure bromine for sanitizing your hot tub. We all know that bather load varies constantly. Although the technology for producing bromine from sodium bromide is effective, there is yet to be a system which automatically adjusts for bather load therefore, on occasion, we may need to shock your hot tub. Won't salt water rust my hot tub? For the vast majority of hot tubs the answer is emphatically no. The Bromine salt used in a Salt Water Spa is not corrosive like common table salt, not to mention there are little to no metals in hot tubs which come into contact with the water. The exception being possibly a stainless steel heater tube (stainless steel doesn't rust) and a coated heater element. Other than that, hot tubs are made of an acrylic shell with PVC and vinyl plumbing, none of which will rust. How is salt water healthier for me and my children? Salt water hot tubs are always producing bromine, even when you are not using your tub. With the constant generation of bromine you are always sure your hot tub water is clean and sanitary. Those who experience mild reactions such as dry, itchy skin when bathing in pools and or hot tubs are likely not reacting to the chlorine or bromine, rather, it is more likely they are reacting to the fillers, binders and glues found in most chlorinating and brominating pucks being used. As it is, the older the water the higher the concentration of these dissolved chemicals in your tub. Since salt water hot tubs generate pure bromine, there are none of these harsh chemicals accumulating in your hot tub. How is a salt water hot tub healthier for the environment? Salt water hot tubs use less water. What? How? The average hot tub holds around 1,500 litres of water. The water in the average hot tub should be changed 4-6 times per year contrasted to a salt water tub needing to have it's water changed as little as once per year. Why? It's simple really, as explained above, salt water hot tubs produce pure bromine. Other tubs require that you add bromine or chlorine, which contain fillers, binders and glues etc. (usually 65%), which give them their special characteristics. Well, all of these other "additives" not only remain in your tub but they also accumulate over time and thus the water needs to be changed. Not so for Salt water hot tubs. Salt Water Spas use less energy .Since a salt water spa requires considerably less frequent water changes, you will not need to re-heat the new water as often, saving on your energy bill. You have invested a lot in your hot tub and you want it to continue to give you many years of relaxation and relief from muscle pain.
