Thetford Mines is located approximately 100 km southwest of Quebec City and equidistant northeast of Sherbrooke . The city is crossed by the Bécancour river . Thetford Mines was founded in 1876 , after the discovery of an eponymous deposit of asbestos (more precisely chrysotile ) by Joseph Fecteau. First known as Kingsville , it was renamed Thetford Mines in 1905 . Around 1930, Asbestos was annexed to the city of Thetford Mines. Thetford Mines merged with Rivière-Blanche on December 14 , 1994, and since municipal mergers in Quebec , the October 17 , 2001, Thetford includes the municipality of Saint-Antoine-de-Pontbriand, the municipality of the village of Robertsonville, the municipality of the township of Thetford-Partie-Sud as well as the towns of Black Lake and of course, Thetford Mines. Being the largest city in the Thetford region (MRC des Appalaches), the city of Thetford Mines brings together on its territory various public service institutions such as the general hospital, the Cégep de Thetford and, since July 2018, the new Thetford Convention Center. The city is the site of several cultural activities such as the Festival Promotuel de la Relève and the local hockey team, the Assurancia , which plays in the LNAH in addition to the major baseball team, the Thetford Blue Sox.
