Every guitar I build begins long before the first shaving of wood is removed. It starts with a vision and the careful, deliberate selection of tonewoods. The grain, density, and resonance of each board dictate the voice the instrument will eventually find. In this video, I’m unboxing the foundation of my latest project. Here is the specific palette of sounds I’ve chosen for this build: Spanish Cedar (Neck): A luthier’s classic for a reason. It is incredibly stable and lightweight, offering excellent resonance that allows vibrations to travel freely from the headstock to the body. Western Red Cedar (Top): Chosen for its immediate responsiveness and warmth. Unlike spruce, red cedar offers a rich, "played-in" harmonic complexity from day one, perfect for delicate fingerstyle and intimate dynamics. Purple Heart (Bridge): Its extreme stiffness and density make it an ideal anchor for the strings, maximizing energy transfer to the soundboard and adding a touch of sustain. Flame Eucalyptus (Back & Sides): A stunning choice both visually and sonically. It provides a punchy, clear tone that sits somewhere between the brightness of Maple and the depth of Rosewood. Machiche (Fretboard): This dense, durable wood provides exceptional note separation and a smooth, fast feel under the fingers, ensuring clarity across the entire register. Building a guitar is an act of balancing these natural forces to create a singular, harmonious voice. Subscribe to follow the journey of this build from raw boards to finished instrument.
