In this video we look at one method for doing auto-detection of a GPIO board. We will add support to automatically detect the FlipBoard module when present. The FlipBoard is available from HackerWarehouse (which is a vendor at defcon). In the "Posts" tab of my YouTube channel, you can leave a message if you want to meet up at defcon. I'll be there Friday and Saturday. In this video, we use a 1K resistor to ground on one of the pins that we would typically use for OUTPUT. The resistance isn't enough to impact the output, but is enough to pull our 38K internal pull-up resistor to ground (around 0.4 volts). NOTE: A second method is to use two resistors to set a specific voltage on a pin and then use the Analog read method to measure the voltage. This may be preferred if you are planning on having a lot of boards with auto-detect. A third method is to add an inexpensive I2C or SPI device that replies back with a specific ID that identifies your device. This is a more robust solution, as it won't have accidental false-positives when a different GPIO board is attached and you can find components for under $1USD that would accomplish the task.
