The combination of the dynamism of the sculpture and its superb patina make this headrest a masterpiece of Yaka art and Congolese sculpture in general. These headrests, called 'musawu' by the Yaka, were both functional and spiritual objects, mainly used by leaders and dignitaries to preserve their complex hairstyle during their sleep. They would also be links with spirits who communicated with men through their dreams. The sculpture combines in this case the representation of the Ngo leopard, an animal symbolizing authority, and a face with human features. He leans on his bent knees, ready to pounce. This alludes to the strength of the leader, who can turn into an animal during the night to kill his enemies.
