Street scene STORYLINE: Critics of Iran's nuclear programme are "bullying" Iran, a former Iranian president declared on Friday, a day after the U.N. nuclear watchdog issued a report that opens the way for additional sanctions against Iran. Former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said at a friday prayers meeting in Tehran, "I tell them clearly and certainly that this path will not come to any conclusion except making trouble for them, for the world, and particularly for the region." Rafsanjani, a high-ranking cleric, holds seats on two of Iran's most important government bodies. His comments echoed those of the current Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said that it was of "no importance whatsoever" if a few states do not believe Iran's nuclear activities are peaceful, state television reported. Addressing worshippers gathered for Friday prayers in Tehran, Rafsanjani said Western countries would fail to achieve anything by "bullying" Iran over its nuclear activities. The United States and its Western allies have insisted Iran must suspend enrichment before it will enter any negotiations over its nuclear programme, a condition Tehran has rejected. "Give up these oppressive pre-conditions and let's return to the table of negotiations," Rafsanjani said. Rafsanjani also reiterated Iran's offer for talks. "All Iranian officials as well as our Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) are ready to ensure, in just and fair negotiations, that Iran is not seeking anything but peaceful nuclear technology," he said. Thursday's IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) report to the Security Council said Iran had not heeded the Security Council warning to halt uranium enrichment but had expanded its nuclear programme. It said Iran had installed nearly one thousand centrifuges. The IAEA's report follows the expiration Wednesday of a 60-day grace period for Iran to halt uranium enrichment, a possible pathway to nuclear arms. The IAEA's report said Iran also has continued to build a heavy water reactor and related facilities.
