West Point Organist Craig Williams plays Schumann's Sketch in D-flat, which was the last in a collection of four sketches written for Pedal Piano. The Pedal Piano, a development following the pedal clavichord and pedal harpsichord, was around by the time of Mozart, who owned one. Though some pedal pianos consist of two separate keyboards, one placed over the other, Schumann had a pedalflügel, an upright piano with a pedal keyboard of 29 notes with a separate string action at the back of the case. The Pedal Piano never enjoyed wide popularity, so most of the works written for Pedal Piano are now performed on the organ. The four Sketches, Opus 58, written by Schumann, is one of three sets of pieces written for the unique instrument. The last piece in the set, in D-flat, is a charming dance-like movement in ternary form, with a beginning two-part section framing a running trio. Schumann shows himself to be the master of the short Romantic character piece, working just as well on the multiple colors of the organ as well as the piano. #pipeorgan #schumann #romanticmusic #westpoint
