Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman vowed that his kingdom was “doing our best” to ensure no repeat of the “mistake” of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist that the US judged was killed with his approval. The prince, known widely as MBS, also expressed empathy for the families of those killed in the 9/11 attacks who have complained about his presidential audience. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers who steered four commercial planes into buildings in September 2001, killing almost 3,000 people, were Saudi. Trump intervened when Mohammed was initially questioned by a reporter about Khashoggi and 9/11 in the Oval Office to say that the prince “knew nothing about it and we can leave it at that — you don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking questions like that”.
