Making Mushroom Logs For Growing Outdoors In UK / Cold Climate Shiitake Mushrooms (Experiment).

This video is not an instruction on how to make and grow Shiitake mushrooms, the idea is purely to document my own experiments and experiences to share them with others so that they can benefit in their own research somehow.. Having done some research but NEVER tried to grow mushrooms and always foraged and eaten mushrooms over the years I thought I would have a go at trying to grow some Shiitake mushrooms on some logs. I did not want to spend much money on this mushroom project at all so after working out what was the best mushroom species to try growing outdoors for the environment we have in UK, it became apparent the best species to try for a beginner were cold climate Shiitake and a couple of types of Oyster mushroom. Having found the cheapest dowel plugs inoculated with cold climate Shiitake mushrooms on Ebay, I decided ordered them. Prepared some Alder and Field Maple logs for the plugs to be put into. Once the logs were cleaned and had the Shiitake plugs tapped in to the drilled holes they were capped with a dab of molten wax to keep any invasive spores out while the logs are cultured. I am very keen to see the results of this little mushroom log experiment and look forward to making the update, failure or not!!
