Beverage on the Beach at Ten Mile Beach On February 20, 2026, I headed north of Fort Bragg to spend a quiet afternoon at Ten Mile Beach. My original plan was to drop in from the old trail near the Ten Mile Bridge on the west side — the shortcut I’ve used for years. But winter storms have carved that path into a washed‑out gully, steep, narrow, and too rough for me to follow safely. So I changed course and drove to the Smith Ranch parking area, the official access point for the Inglenook Fen–Ten Mile Dunes trail. From there, it’s about 2.1 miles through shifting dunes, old Haul Road remnants, and wide‑open coastal grassland before you reach the beach. It’s a beautiful walk — slow, steady, and honest. I reached the mouth of the Ten Mile River, found a quiet spot on the sand, and enjoyed my beverage while listening to the long, low rhythm of the Pacific. Nothing fancy — just ocean peace, river light, and the kind of stillness you only get on this stretch of coast. Along the way, I share a few notes about the Ten Mile River, its salmon and steelhead habitat, and the history of the old Union Lumber Company Haul Road that once connected this watershed to the Fort Bragg mill. The dunes and the river valley are always changing, always reclaiming the old roadbed one storm at a time. If you enjoy quiet coastal walks, local history, and simple moments on the Mendocino Coast, this one’s for you.
