On the lines of the Andhra Pradesh government, Haryana too has announced it wants 75 per cent of private sector jobs in the state, till a certain salary slab, reserved for local candidates. In November 2020, the state Assembly passed the Haryana State Employment of Local Candidates Bill, 2020 paving way for more employment opportunities for locals in the private sector. On March 2, the Governor gave his assent to the Bill. Haryana’s new reservation law is taking work from home to the next level. Gurugram, which shares its border with New Delhi, is home to some of the biggest powerhouses in the sector like Google, Microsoft, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies and even Genpact. The MNC's may be ably to comply or find a loophole, but it is the local smaller players who are going to suffer the most. Haryana is not the first state to push for such a move. Others have tried to do it as well, but, all of them have run into hurdles of their own. In this edition of Big Picture we take a closer look at the issue of reservation in the private sector.
