50 years ago today, "Sesame Street" episode 409 premiered, featuring the very first Sesame Street News Flash segment. One thing I noticed about those segments from the 1970s and 1980s is that they have gone through the most title card variations of any recurring segments on the show. While in most cases it featured the usual standard design (the "NEWS FLASH" cloud with stars and lightning bolt), the color scheme or the sound effects/music could vary quite a bit (and in a few rare cases, it's almost completely different!) This seems to make sense, as over 70 of these special report segments were produced! Here are all the variations I have compiled, including some more rare ones! For the sake of nostalgia, I've also included quite a few instances of when Kermit would be talking to someone off-camera after it fades from the logo to the sketch before realizing he's on the air. 0:01 -The very first version of the News Flash logo, note Jerry Nelson's different-sounding announcer voice and the typewriter sound FX. (1972) 0:19 - Same as last time, but halfway into the logo it suddenly becomes superimposed over Kermit in action (1972) 0:37 - Same as the firs one, but with no additional SFX and with slightly sped-up music (1972) 0:44 - Another superimposed variant where the all-white logo flashes over Kermit (1973) 0:58 - Sepiatone version, morse code sounds now used (1973) 1:13 - Rare alternate "news bulletin!" logo (1973) 1:31 - Black-and-white variant (1974) 1:35 - Enlarged variant, standard logo color scheme (1977) 1:54 - Black-and-white variant with lower-pitched morse code SFX (1976) 2:00 - Same as standard variation, with high-pitched beeping noises (1976) 2:08 - Standard variation, but when transitioning to Kermit the black background fades into the sketch while the logo is superimposed over the action for a couple of seconds (1978) 2:22 - Slightly wider variation, note the Herry Monster-sounding announcer voice in this one (1979) 2:31 - Dr. Nobel Price intro variation (1980) 2:47 - Standard enlarged variant, but with all the stars now yellow (1981) 2:57 - "Flashing" variation (1983) 3:09 - Dr. Nobel Price intro variation, but without fading to the establishing shot of his island laboratory halfway through (1983) 3:26 - "Flashing" variation with custom announcement, "slides" up at end instead of fading (1984) 3:41 - A still version of the flashing variant (1985) 3:49 - The standard 1986 logo with standard news flash music and announcer (1987, this version was also often used to replace older pre-1980s NEWS FLASH logos on post-1986 airings.) 4:03 - The 1986 variation, but with Marty Robinson doing the announcer spiel instead of Jerry Nelson (1989) 4:10 - The 1986 variation, but with a custom Jerry Nelson announcer spiel (1989) 4:20 - The 1986 variation, but with different music, taken from the "20 Years and Still Counting" special (1989) 4:28 - "World Map" variant, seen on "Elmo Saves Christmas" (1996) 4:43 - Late 90s "Sesame Street NEW" logo seen at the start of Kermit's report on Slimey returning from his space mission (1998) All clips © by CTW/SesameWorkshop; FAIR USE!
