Sulur Assembly constituency (No.116), located in Coimbatore district, is known for its strong roots in textile weaving and agriculture. The constituency first witnessed Assembly elections in 1952 and 1957, both of which were won by the Congress. Following delimitation, the constituency was removed and later reconstituted in 2011. Since its reformation, Sulur has faced four elections, including a by-election. In these, the AIADMK has emerged victorious three times, while the DMDK won once, making Sulur a stronghold for the AIADMK. The constituency has a diverse social composition, with Vellalar Gounders, Naidus, Devanga Chettiars, Thevars, Mudaliars, Arunthathiyars, along with Christian and Muslim communities living in significant numbers. Traditionally, all major parties tend to field candidates from the Gounder community in this constituency. In the previous election, AIADMK candidate V.P. Kandhasamy won with 1,19,000 votes, defeating Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMK) candidate Premier Selvam by a margin of around 32,000 votes. Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate Ilangovan secured about 14,000 votes. For the upcoming election, sitting MLA V.P. Kandhasamy is seeking re-nomination from the AIADMK. Former minister S.M. Velusamy and Union Secretary Kandhavel are also reportedly in the race. From the DMK, District Secretary Thalapathy Murugesan’s name is being discussed, while DMK ally KMK is also demanding the seat. As of now, there is no clarity on TVK’s candidate. Given the current political equations, the AIADMK-led alliance appears to be holding the upper hand in the Sulur constituency.
