Some trips you plan, others you feel. This one was pure feeling — chasing the monsoon into Kerala and beyond. Day 1: We hopped on an Air India Express flight from Kolkata to Kochi — just 2.5 hours and we were breathing in that heavy, rain-washed air. From the airport, a five-hour drive took us to Munnar. The road was like a teaser trailer for the adventure ahead — Spice Plantations that smelled like an open spice jar, Valara Falls thundering down, Cheeyappara Falls flowing in perfect steps, and the misty Kallar Falls hiding in green folds. Day 2 & 3: Munnar was a dream. We woke up to rolling tea gardens, visited the Eravikulam National Park to see the rare Nilgiri Tahr, stood before the mighty Anamudi Peak, and spent hours at Echo Point, yelling into the hills like kids. The list goes on — Mattupetty Dam, Kundala Lake, Rose Garden, spice plantations… all wrapped in soft rain and drifting clouds. Day 4: The road to Kodaikanal was another beauty. By afternoon, we were strolling around Kodai Lake, watching boats glide across the water. We visited Chettiar Park with its legendary Kurinji flowers(Next blossoms in 2030), the peaceful Kurinji Andavar Temple, and the gushing Silver Cascade Falls. Day 5 & 6: Kodai spoiled us. We stood at Pillar Rocks wrapped in cloud, explored Bear Shola Falls, wandered the pine forests, and took in the views from Green Valley. Coaker’s Walk was our slowest, most peaceful kilometer of the trip. We also found time for Dolphin’s Nose, Bryant Park, and plenty of homemade chocolates. Day 7: Goodbye hills, hello sea breeze. We drove to Fort Kochi, checked into the heritage-style Napier hotel, and let the coastal charm sink in. Day 8 & 9: This was our unplanned gift — a cancelled flight gave us more time. We walked to Vypin and Cherai Beaches, crossed the Rainbow Bridge, watched Kathakali performances, explored Jew Town, visited the Santa Cruz Basilica, and took lazy boat rides in the backwaters. Day 10: Breakfast, one last look at the rain-polished streets, and then back to Kolkata — carrying suitcases full of spices, chocolates, and memories that smell of wet earth. Why you should go? Because monsoon isn’t a reason to avoid Kerala — it’s the reason to visit. The hills are greener, waterfalls wilder, and every cup of chai tastes better when there’s rain outside.
