Motorcycle Camping - Te Pakau Campsite, Te Urewera

It's been a while since I've chucked the tent on the bike and gone camping. So, to remedy the situation I looked for a campsite that was out-of-the-way. The Te Pakau campsite is in north Te Urewera. You can't get there from the lake. You have to go around to near Opotiki and head down Matahi Valley Road. On the way there I decided to make the trip more interesting by cutting through the Whirinaki Forest Park. It'd been a couple of years since I'd gone that way. The road was much easier on my on Tiger 900 Rally, but it's still a very "interesting" road. According to the DoC website the Te Pakau campsite has space for 60 non-powered camping spots. It certainly has a lot of space. It's unfortunate that the only other people there thought that the space was best used as a rally circuit. I don't understand why people would head that far away from civilization and then behave so badly. The way home was back along the Te Urewera Rainforest Route.
