Nursing Education. • Nursing education is the professional education for the preparation of nurses to render professional nursing care to people of all ages, in all phases of health and illness, in a variety of settings. • Since independence in 1947, many changes have been taking place and attitude toward nursing is still changing. • Modem nursing education started on the basis of Florence Nightingale work and training plan. • Preparation for modern nursing education began with the establishment of Nightingale School of Nursing in London. A brief HISTORY OF NURSING EDUCATION in India. 1. 1664 - Nurses brought from England by East India Co. (Military Nursing) - Madras General Hospital 2. 1854 - Govt. sanction – Training School for Midwives at ‘Lying in Hospital’ Madras. 3. 1871 - First G.N.M program - ‘Diploma in Nursing’. Govt. General Hospital, Madras. 4. 1874 – 80 - Mission Hospitals - began training for Indian Nurses 5. 1886 – First School of Nursing in a full-fledged form was started at J. J Hospital, Bombay 6. 1908 - TNAI - established 7. 1918 - LHVs Training at LADY READING SCHOOL - R.A.K Hospital, DELHI. 8. 1926 - First Nurses Registration Act passed in Madras 9. 1935 - Madras And Bombay Nursing Councils were established 10. 1946 - I ST. CON – R.A.K. CON, R.A.K DELHI and C.M.C, Vellore, TN. 11. 1947 - Indian Nursing Council (INC) Act was passed 12. 1949 - INC established 13. 1951 – First ANM Course in Punjab. 14. 1952 - I ST- 10 M0NTH COURSES in Public Health NSG. for Trained nurses. 15. 1956 - INC recommendation to discontinue L.H.V. TRAINING and Integrate PHN / CHN at all NSG. curriculum (in Basic B.Sc. n & GNM ) 16. 1959 - M.Sc. Nursing – R.A.K, Delhi. 17. 1963 - Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing in Trivandrum, Kerala. 18. 1976 - Health Assistant Female Course. 19. 1977 - Multi Purpose Health Worker Course & Rural Health Services 20. 1985 - Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established 21. 1986 - M. Phil Programme in Nursing – RAK C.O.N, Delhi 22. 1991 - First Doctoral Programme (Ph.D) in Nursing at M.V Shetty Memorial College, Mangalore , Karnataka. 23. 1992 - Post Basic Programme Started under IGNOU 24. 2011 - One year Post Basic Diploma Programmes started  Critical Care Nursing,  Oncology Nursing,  Nurse Midwifery Practitioner  Emergency and Disaster Nursing,  Others. • A Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme (2 years), • Postdoctoral Associate Programme.
