Once sheltering Viking passageways, these Norwegian fjords attracted English and German aristocracy by the 19th century, drawn by the scenery, clean air, and opportunities for hiking, mountain climbing, and fishing, heralding a new era of adventure tourism. Formed during the last ice age by massive glaciers carving steep valleys through the mountains, the fjords feature walls rising 4,600 feet and plunging 1,640 feet below the surface.
