Artists often ask me how I approach drawing realistic fur. In this demo, I'll show you how I use just three coloured pencils to capture the essence of a cat's ear - focusing on the fundamental building blocks of shape, value (lights and darks), and texture. I suggest a great starting point is toned paper (i.e. not white or black), a light pencil, a dark pencil and a pencil in-between. Materials used: Strathmore 400 Toned Gray Derwent Lightfast White Derwent Lightfast Black Derwent Lightfast Mars Violet What You'll Explore: Understanding the fundamental elements of realistic drawing Capturing texture through varied pencil movements Working with a minimal colour palette Creating depth and form without getting stuck on details The importance of spontaneity in artistic practice A candid look at how I approach drawing, what I see and the way I move my pencils. To draw a full coloured portrait, that may take 20+ hours, the techniques are similar. I simply work slower and bring in more layers and colours. For anyone interested in my approach to drawing, I recommend starting here. Grab more coloured pencil art tips every week with the Art Break Corner newsletter.
