Drawing Structures for Esters | Practice Examples | Organic Chemistry In this video, I will show you how to draw the structures for esters in an easy way! I draw the following esters in this tutorial: 1. methyl pentanoate 2. ethyl propanoate 3. propyl butanoate 4. propyl hexanoate 5. butyl ethanoate 6. 2-methylpropyl ethanoate Esters have two components. One component is from the carboxylic acid (parent chain, which attaches with the carbon in the COO group). The second component is from the alcohol (side chain, which attaches with the oxygen in the COO group). To draw the structure for an ester, we first draw the functional group (COO group), and then we draw the parent chain and attach it with the carbon in the COO group (Note: the carbon in the COO group is always the first carbon when numbering).
