EnviroWaste runs just this one little Manco GL300 down in Ashburton to collect the glass each fortnight, and it isn't a very complicated nor exciting operation either. The crates are simply dumped into the shallow hopper, then sorted into separate colour hoppers, before the lifter compartments are dumped into their respective pods. I didn't expect said lifter to be near as jerky as it is, however all the other videos I have seen of these trucks have shown a far smoother lowering function, so I'd say this is an exception. I caught up with this truck shortly before midday on a Wednesday in the small town/suburb of Tinwald, just outside of Ashburton. As boring as the action may be, I did quite enjoy how fast the little thing zipped between stops, especially on the more rural streets with greater distances between crates. It's a shame EnviroWaste didn't opt for a chassis built by Iveco for this one, as it would've been cool to see a newer LEV Acco, however, I would say it was too impractical and difficult to convert it, then mount this predominantly Hino paired body on. The green crates collected were those used before the new collection systems introduction for the pick-up of comingled recycling; some of you who have been around for a while might remember a video uploaded years back of the converted bus that picked them up. Today's operation is slightly more high tech, however, funnily enough, this truck still requires a forklift to remove the pods for them to be unloaded, meaning still is a fairly manual operation. I was told that often times when this truck breaks down, the collection becomes even more manual, as crate contents are slung into the backs of trailers and utes to ensure their on-time collection. The separate collection of glass is making a comeback around the country, with near all councils including the service in upcoming and recently commenced contracts to increase the quality of recycling. It'll be interesting to see which other territories will introduce such a service, and where we might see crates start to pop up again. The driver wasn't too keen on the camera, so a massive thanks to her for being a good sport and letting me take a few clips of this fairly unique and truly Kiwi truck, enjoy,,, Please note that under NO CIRCUMSTANCE is any of the footage seen here to be used against the driver(s) and/or contractor(s).
