Nine Pound Hammer is an American cowpunk band, formed in 1985 by vocalist Scott Luallen and guitarist Blaine Cartwright (later of Nashville Pussy) in their hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky. Though not recorded until 1987, the band was one of the initial wave of acts to combine the roots sound of country music with punk rock and southern rock, and became a forerunner to subsequent roots-punk artists. The name of the band is taken from the Merle Travis song "Nine Pound Hammer." The band has six full-length albums and several EPs. Nine Pound Hammer and the Detroit cable-TV show, BanDin Detroit came together in October, 1987. The band trekked from Kentucky to Detroit, to start recording their 1st album, for Len Puch and his Wanghead With Lips Records. During their stay, Len set up a show for them at Reruns Lounge in Dearborn, Michigan, where many post-punk and new wave bands had been playing since 1982. This episode is a highlight of the series. The episode was shown throughout the month of November, 1988 across Wayne and Oakland Counties in the Detroit area. It was also used to acknowledge the closing of Reruns Lounge in October, 1988. The band was recorded in Binaural Stereo for this episode, as were most episodes of BanDin Detroit. Listen through earbuds or headphones for live 3-D sound, and you will be with us at this amazing event. Blaine Cartwright's later band, Nashville Pussy is a Grammy-nominated hard-rock group who formed almost 20 years ago because they were bored with all the bad music in the world. They've released six albums, formed of equal parts greasy Southern rock, outlaw country, and pulverizing rock. It's not for nothing that Cartwright counts Motorhead as heroes. None of that has changed. "I'm still doing Nashville Pussy. We'll probably record a new album within the year," Cartwright says. "I hate when a really hard-rock band says, 'That's over with. I'm going to come with the acoustic now, because I've matured.' Well, I haven't matured at all. If anything, I've gotten more immature the last couple years." In 2005, Nine Pound Hammer was asked to pen a theme song and lyrics for "12 oz. Mouse," an Adult Swim animated series, showing on America's Cartoon Network. Singer Scott Luallen also appears in the series as the voice actor for the character Roostre. More recently, they were featured on "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Colon the Soundtrack" with the track "Carl's Theme," in which the lyrics play off of the character "Carl" and one of his lines in Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Nine Pound Hammer continues to occasionally perform and record, so stay tuned. This text was adapted from Wikipedia, AdultSwim.com, CharlestonCityPaper.com and Facebook pages.
