Meet Eliza and Michelle – two Independent Domestic Violence Advisors or Advocates (IDVAs) providing vital support to help people deal with the impact of domestic violence. The purpose of an IDVA is to secure the safety of people who are at high-risk of domestic abuse. Independent Domestic Violence Advisors serve as the victim’s primary point of contact, usually from the point of crisis. Their job is to work in the short- and medium-term to put victims on the path to long-term safety. IDVAs will design a pro-active support plan that works with lots of different agencies so that victims and their families are protected, and they may advocate for victims through the court process if they take their case to trial. Hear how they build trust with their clients so they can give tailored support on anything from getting them into housing or a refuge, to dealing with police and the courts. Listen to IDVAs Eliza and Michelle break down some myths around the service, including the idea that you have to have reported domestic violence to the police to access it.
