Live performance at @lucernefestival 2017. Julien-François Zbinden (1917-2021) Trois Esquisses Japonaises, op.72 Movements: 1. Kamakura 2. Miyajima 3. Himeji In 1980, during a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun, the composer visited a number of Japanese historical sites. Three of them served as the imaginative basis for the composition of the Three Japanese Sketches. Kamakura, 40 kilometres south of Tokyo, is home to a monumental Buddha, now in the open air but originally inside a temple that was destroyed many times by fire. It was erected in 1292. From this statue, one never tires of admiring the quiet strength, the serenity and above all the mystery of this inner and contemplative look at the invisible and the infinite. Miyajima is a small island in the bay of Hiroshima. On its northern coast, one discovers the Itsukushima sanctuary Itsukushima shrine, dating from 592, is dedicated to the Shinto religion. Most of the buildings are located on the water, as well as the famous large Torii, a superb red portico. It is a very busy place where a gentle way of life reigns, also due to the affectionate presence of numerous deer that mingle freely with the public. 100 kilometres west of Kyoto, the town of Himeji is dominated by an imposing fortress dating from 1333. This impressive building is painted white, the colour of death in Japan. Fortunately, this national treasure survived the disaster of the Second World War. It houses an impressive military museum.
