I started this track a while back but shelved it when I felt like it needed more. When I came back to it a few months later, my tastes had shifted and even though it was fairly minimal, I was happier with it. I added a tiny four note melody and the pad lead line that comes in later, but that's mostly it. The main thing I did was wire up a bunch of effects sends to complex, evolving delays and reverbs. The track itself is mostly an eight bar loop, but the jam stays interesting to my ears by always having some timbral modulation or varied effect going on. I'm working towards building a full-length live set, and this is a big step towards that for me. I like how this jam came out, and I was able to play it live fairly easily just by adjusting knobs and adding layers. For anyone curious, here's how everything is mapped: • The left column of pads are clips for a group that has basically all of the tonal content in it. This lets me press a single button to advance through the melodic structure of the track. There isn't a lot of structure in this one, so it's mainly going through the two different bassline sequences, and then going to the two breakdowns where subway field recordings come in. • The remaining columns of pads launch clips for different drum parts. From left to right, it's kick, congas, clap, a few different shaker patterns, and then the two hi hats (which in retrospect could have been combined since I launched them together). • The top row of knobs are volume for kick, congas, clap, and shakers/hats. This lets me easily mute and bring in those parts for fills and breaks. Ideally, those would be buttons, but I didn't want to use clip launchers for this and the Launchpad doesn't let you mix clip launching and custom modes. I may end up getting a second Launchpad at some point. • The next row send each of the corresponding drum parts to a huge modulated delay thing that turns them into a wash of sound. • The third row controls the filters for the bass, chord stabs, as well as feedback on the chord stab delay. I use the latter one in a few places to have the stab pile up into a big wall of sound. • Fourth row is more filters for the lead, pad melody, arp, and main pad. I use the first two essentially as clip launchers to bring those parts in and out. Then the filter on the arp is used mostly as a transitional element. • The fifth row has a volume knob for all drums so that I can bring them in and out as a whole. Then a send level that sends the drums to a huge reverb that turns them into something like a cymbal wash. If I were to play this track without all the effects, it would be completely boring. But with all the delay, reverb, and modulation going on, I feel like it comes to life. On Soundcloud: / diffusion
