Long-term follow-up for children with LUTO includes monitoring for kidney infections, renal insufficiency and bladder dysfunction. http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu One of the key questions families have is wanting to know how kids with lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) do after they’re born. Will they be able to spontaneously void on their own? Will they require use of a catheter to empty the bladder, or be catheter dependent? Will they have acceptable renal function (kidney function)? Long-term follow-up for children born with LUTO involves outpatient clinic visits with urology and nephrology to monitor for kidney infections, renal insufficiency and bladder dysfunction. Some children also need to be treated for respiratory issues related to underdeveloped lungs. Experts from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are focused on improving long-term outcomes for children with LUTO. The team at the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment is currently studying the possibility of directly treating posterior urethral valves before birth.
