Welcome back! We start a new week with a new theme! In these exercises we'll be exploring the possible relationships of colors that fall into hues that could be considered complementaries. Perfect complementaries are able to do two things: They bring out the inherent qualities of each other, which means that the redness of the red will be enhanced when placed alongside green, and the greenness of the green will be showcased when accompanied by red. Oofff! What a fascinating and abstract quality of our perception! The redness of red... it's so strange to try and define something so seemingly elusive. But through painting we can see how these truly magnificent relationships work! The second important aspect of complementaries is that, when mixed together they cancel each other out. So in painting terms, we would get a fairly neutral gray when we combine the two colors. Does that mean that ANY red is a perfect and wonderful complementary to ANY green. Short answer is no, but we'll explore this further in this week. For today though, an boringly captivated Manu can help us navigate the relationship between a red that would be almost smack in the middle of the red hue, and an earthy green-yellow. One ( the red) being a bit more saturated than the green, and both of them being of similar value. So we sacrificed a bit in terms of contrast, but we gained a ton of harmony. So are they perfect complementaries??? Hmmm, I would say not quite, seeing as to how there's a noticeable trace of the dominant color in the mix when trying to produce a gray. Regardless of learning that they're not quite perfect for each other, a painting HAS to be painted, so as always, we have to recognize our limitations and push the options that we find along the way!
