What your looking at is a Lister D.K. TVO Petrol engine - circa 1940 TVO ( Tractor Vaporising Oil ) was a special Petrol / Paraffin mix, readily available back in the day made by Esso / Shell Im told. It was considered cheaper to run a modified engine on this special mix as opposed to straight Petrol. My knowledge of TVO fuel is very limited and Im still learning as I go. The start up process consists of starting the engine on normal Petrol and leaving to run for 5 mins or so until the exhaust manifold gets hot, then a dual fuel switch is thrown to allow the TVO mix to flow into the carburettor instead of Petrol. The TVO mix vaporises on the hot exhaust manifold, thus combusting in the engine in the same way that Petrol does. The Petrol comes from the small tank and the TVO mix from the larger tank. When shutting down, the fuel tap is switched back to Petrol and left to run on for a little longer before finally switching the engine completely off, this aids the start up process for next time. The engine will only start up with Petrol and not TVO due to the the exhaust manifold being cold, and therefore the TVO mix wouldn't vaporise, hence the engine wouldn't fire up in the usual way. So its Petrol to start and finish with, TVO mix in between. Having only recently acquired this engine, Im still on a learning curve with it, so bear with me If I appear to be making a few mistakes along the way...
