Ultrasound imaging of the normal esophagus reveals a multi-layered tubular structure located posterior to the trachea in the neck and upper chest. In the transverse section, it appears as a round to oval shape with a central echogenic mucosal interface and surrounding hypoechoic muscular wall. In the longitudinal section, it shows a collapsed tubular form with visible peristalsis during swallowing. When saliva or water is swallowed, an anechoic bolus briefly distends the esophageal lumen, followed by a coordinated wave-like contraction of the muscular wall. No residual fluid is seen afterward, confirming normal esophageal motility.
