Ashtanga Yoga teacher Alexander Medin discusses how the reputation of Yoga is being damaged by many New Age yoga teachers, and why it is important not to take some of the modern yoga teachers too seriously. Alexander, who is himself an Ashtanga teacher, says that learning yoga asanas and doing backbends for a healthy and youthful body does not make someone a ‘yogi’. Yoga is a beautiful ancient science but unfortunately a lot of injustice is done to it by teachers who promote themselves rather than facilitate the deepening of yoga experience, says Alexander. One can follow the guiding principles of yoga to build up stability and focus the mind through practice, but the ultimate truth of yoga cannot be defined; it has to be explored and experienced.
