☆Hashigui-iwa Rocks – Kushimoto Stretching for about 850 meters from Kushimoto toward Oshima, over 40 rock pillars of various sizes rise dramatically from the sea. Shaped by long years of marine erosion, only the harder rock remains, creating a scene that resembles the piles of a bridge standing in a row. ☆Around 15 million years ago, magma rose from underground and intruded along cracks in the strata, solidifying into igneous rock dikes. Later, as the land uplifted, the surrounding softer mudstone was eroded by waves, while the harder dikes remained. Continued erosion shaped them into their distinctive pile-like forms. Combined with the legend of Kobo Daishi, this geological process gave birth to the unique landscape of Hashigui-iwa. ☆Hotel Nakanoshima Located in Nanki-Katsuura, a land of faith and hot springs blessed with deep blue seas and brilliant sunshine, Hotel Nakanoshima offers a truly scenic retreat. From the observation deck, home to a stone monument of Bokusui Wakayama’s poem “Kumanonada Ryōjō,” guests can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. After relaxing in an open-air bath accompanied by the sound of waves, savor a drink and fresh seafood nurtured by the Kuroshio Current. ☆Nakanoshima lies at the entrance to Katsuura Bay, a small island surrounded by two inlets and rocky shores, and part of the scenic “Kii no Matsushima” area along the Kumano Sea. It is designated as a Special Protected Area within Yoshino-Kumano National Park, established in 1936. ☆Katsuura Bay, enclosed by mountains on three sides, has long been a naturally sheltered harbor protected from the rough waves of the Kumano Sea. Until the late Meiji period, many sailing ships are said to have anchored in Nakanoshima’s inlets, waiting for favorable winds. ☆Hot Springs Open-air baths with a grand panoramic view Enjoy 100% natural hot spring water, flowing directly from the source. The island boasts six hot spring sources, producing an abundant 700 tons of water per day—about 486 liters per minute. A gentle sulfur aroma, unique to hot springs, enhances the experience, while the mineral-rich waters offer a wide range of therapeutic benefits. ☆Onsen Benefits Spring Quality: Sulfur-containing Sodium Chloride Hot Spring Traditionally believed to help with: Neuralgia, lower back pain, sensitivity to cold, mild asthma, stiff shoulders, bruises, mobility issues, digestive discomfort, mild high blood pressure, diabetes, atopic dermatitis, post-illness recovery, fatigue, and overall health and well-being. ☆Guests can reach Hotel Nakanoshima by a dedicated shuttle boat from Katsuura Port.
