In 1975, a secret chamber was discovered by Medici Chapel Museum director Paolo Dal Poggetto quite by accident. It opened to the public 50 years after its unearthing. We had the privilege to view this pensive and quiet space where the artist spent approximately 2 months hidden away. How it was discovered: Poggetto sensed the hidden chamber was more than storage—and he was right. Beneath layers of plaster, sketches emerged, which are attributed to Michelangelo. Covering all four walls, the drawings offer a rare glimpse into the artist’s working mind and it was a remarkable and intimate experience! Why was Michelangelo being concealed in this space ? In 1530, the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo hid in a secret room under the Medici Chapels at the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence. He was in danger of being executed by Pope Clement VII, who was a member of the powerful Medici family. Michelangelo had sided with a popular revolt that had briefly driven the Medicis out of Florence, even helping to design fortifications for the republican government. When the Medicis returned to power, Michelangelo's life was at risk. He was hidden by a prior of the church and remained in the small, cramped room for about two months. During this time, he used the walls of his hiding place as a sketchbook, creating numerous charcoal and chalk drawings. These sketches are believed to be studies for both new projects and revisions of his previous works, including figures from the Sistine Chapel, his statue of David, and the Leda and the Swan painting. The ticket to enter Michelangelo’s secret room must be purchased together with the ticket for the Museum of the Medici Chapels.
