Boosting Biodiversity to Build Business: Hugh Grierson

Hugh Grierson farms an organic traditional family farm in Perthshire, Scotland. Located in the Strathearn valley 5 miles outside of the city of Perth the business has grown to incorporate 2 main farm sites, Newmiln Farm and Balgowan. The farms first received organic status in 2002 and have moved into new areas of production namely organic sheep, pigs and cattle, organic potato crops, organic egg production and organic table chicken. Hugh has increased biodiversity on the farm through introducing new husbandry techniques and through planting trees and hedges, all of which have benefited both the business and the local environment. Scotland’s Farm Advisory Service (FAS) is part of the Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) which is co-funded by the EU and Scottish Government, providing information and resources aimed at increasing the profitability and sustainability of farms and crofts.
