This is a short, picture-based video where we take a look at how metamorphism changes felsic rocks, using images to tell the story. It’s a great time of year to get out and look at rocks—cooler weather, fresh road cuts, and plenty to learn just by pulling over, grabbing a sample, and studying it. In this video, we focus on: Granite, a classic felsic igneous rock How it responds to greenschist facies metamorphism How it changes under amphibolite facies metamorphism And how clay-rich rocks (shale) evolve through slate, phyllite, and schist 🪨 Topics Covered Why granite is mostly unaffected by greenschist facies conditions How deep burial, high temperature, and high pressure transform granite into banded gneiss How clay minerals behave during metamorphism The progression from shale → slate → phyllite → schist Indicator minerals that appear at amphibolite facies conditions, including: Garnet Staurolite Kyanite Sillimanite These minerals tell us a lot about the temperature and pressure conditions a rock has experienced. This video is part of a continuing series where I show before-and-after images of rocks and explain what metamorphism does to them. Future videos will cover other rock types and compositions.
