Boltonia asteroides (Snowbank) It's that time of year when we're starting to put the vegetable garden to bed. Were still getting some tomatoes out of the garden, peppers are still producing, got a few okra, still to pull. But things are winding down the veg garden. What's winding up and in full high dudgeon are the Astor family. This time of year's a great time the year for Boltonia, the Solidago, the goldenrods, the Asters, the Dahlias. These are all blooming for us right now. Boltonia is a wonderful American native plant. There are five species in the genus Boltonia. That are all native to the eastern half the United States with some plants growing in some stretches of southern Canada. Boltonia is a member of the of the Aster family. It used to be called the Composite family, Compositae, named by Linnaeus for the fact that each of these single flower heads is a multitude of other flowers. The white are the ray flowers, and the yellow in the middle are disk flowers. The Snowbank Boltonia has the white disk flowers, but Boltonia also comes in purple, lilac, and pink. All the Aster family other than Wood Aster are sun lovers, so if you can put them in full sun you get more flowering. My preference is to put it in a sandy, poor soil. What happens in the rich soil with the Boltonia and some of the other Asters for that matter is that they grow so well that they grow to a height where they start the flop, and they need staking and tying. You can forestall that problem just by planting them in a dryer soil, dryer location, poor soil, sandier your soil, that sort of thing. They make a great cut flower, long lasting in the vase. The stems are really strong and has a good branching habit. Snowbank is good to separate the mauves and the purples of the Asters from the yellows and oranges of the Helianthemum and the Blackeyed Susan's that are still blooming in our garden. Boltonia asteroides (Snowbank) a great native wildflower for New England and the rest of the eastern United States.
