This is a story of two mates, shaping boards in the north west of Australia. A days drive from the nearest city, belted by intense sun almost every day of the year, with only the vans they live out of, a small marquee, a couple of hand tools, and absolutely no experience when it comes to shaping surf boards. Follow along on the journey as two mates DIY hand shape a twin pin & mid twin in the middle of nowhere, whilst filming every high & low moment for this short surfing film. There really is no words to describe the feeling of fulfilling a childhood dream, with your best mate right by your side, but getting to surf the turquoise Western Australian waters on a craft you created with your own bare hands is pretty surreal to say the least. A special thanks to our sponsors Ottway the Label, Merchants of the Sun & Project Blank for helping this creative vision come to life. Complete soundtrack by the talented Sturt Avenue - you can find their music here; https://open.spotify.com/artist/6W1uU... Narrated by a dear friend who has inspired us time and time again to chase the things that light us up, Mack Roth. We hope you enjoy our first ever Solside Studio short film production! www.solsidestudio.com/film-production Environmental Disclaimer: All members that make up Solside Studio are environmentally driven individuals, caring immensely for the environment around them. Lucky enough to travel Australia's beautiful natural landscapes we tread as lightly as possible, and do out bit wherever we can. We are very aware of the toxic nature of shaping surfboards, and is one of the many reasons we decided to shape our own. We researched many alternatives and environmentally friendly products, even contemplating timber boards (but this is very impractical given our tools, location, and experience). Instead we opted to do it the conventional way, but still mindful of our waste in the process. One of the more important ones being that we did a heavier than normal glassing schedule on the boards, meaning they will last far longer than your store bought boards that will last one winter season (at best). We also bought blanks that were undersized for the standard you would normally purchase for these specific boards. This meant we had far less scrap we would be cutting off. It made the process more difficult but far less off cuts in the end was worth it. For the sake of the films visuals, we have showed the boys shaping boards in the deserted environment however this was only for the brief shots in the film. 99.99% of the shaping was undertaken in a 4 walled marquee with full ground coverage to catch all offcuts and foam, or in a completely sealed sea shipping container. Obviously a completely white background doesn't really set the scene as well. We hope this does inspire people to maybe go out and shape their own boards, but please understand the toxic nature of the craft to yourself and the environment and please research the appropriate practices for disposing of offcuts etc. and more importantly, make boards that last!
