Thucydides' Melian Dialogue, in which the mighty Athenians order the little city of Melos to surrender or be destroyed, is often quoted as a justification for Realpolitik: "There is justice only between equals... The strong do what they want, and the weak just have to suck it up." But what if people have been reading it wrong for the last 2500 years? It is a dialogue, after all, with two sides; why assume that one side is completely right about everything? And what happens if we try exploring its dramatic potential, rather than presenting it just as a couple of men in suits or uniforms arguing with one another across a conference table? This performance from February 2020 was the result of a week of intensive workshopping, discussion and rehearsal, a collaboration between creatives (led by Rebecca Atkinson-Lord of Arch 468), actors, and Neville Morley, academic expert in the modern influence of Thucydides.
