February came. This is the time of planting peppers. Today we are going to conduct an experiment on the germination of seeds of hot peppers. These seeds are expired. I found some of my old pepper seeds "Gorgon". This kind of pepper I already planted a few years ago. Pepper was grown at my house on the windowsill. This is a very productive variety of pepper with beautiful and delicious fruits. But the shelf life of these pepper seeds expired in December 2014. And in February 2018, we will give them another chance. Today I'm going to germinate pepper seeds. Many people are left with bags of expired seeds. I think that everyone will be curious to know the percentage of germination of these seeds. Especially if it's your favorite variety! So, less words, more action! I have 16 seeds left. I dip them in warm water and stir it well. It is very important to mix well, so that there are no air bubbles left on the seeds. We can immediately see that 5 seeds are not going to sink. But let's leave them alone for 10 minutes, so that they are saturated with moisture. So, ten minutes have passed, but the situation has not changed. There are still 5 seeds on the surface of the water. I take them out of the water and put them in an empty glass. Light, that is, the floating seeds are considered to be of poor quality. Heavy seeds, with a large supply of nutrients and a strong embryo, tend to sink to the bottom. Now I will add two teaspoons of salt to 250 ml of water. I increase the density of the water and, accordingly, its buoyant force. Immediately, we see that some of the sunken seeds are also beginning to surface. There were four more pepper seeds on the surface of the salt water. I also put them in a glass. At the bottom, there are 7 of the heaviest seeds left. We take them out and put them in a separate container. Let's call these seeds "Group number 1". Then the seeds that have not sunk in plain and salty water, we fill again with salt water for ten minutes. After 10 minutes, we see that only three of the nine seeds remain on the surface. By the way, after another ten minutes, the situation has not changed. We will call the sunken seeds "Group number 2", and the floating seeds "Group number 3". The soaking process is traditional: in a double-layer cotton fabric. It should be thoroughly soaked in warm water and lightly wrung out. Then we spread each group of seeds on a separate cloth, put it in some container. In this case, I put everything on the plates. Do not forget to wash off the salt seeds by washing them in running water. We put them in cellophane bags with the group number. I do not tie the bag, so that there is free air access. It is enough just to lower the edges of the package so that the moisture does not evaporate. I germinate the seeds at a temperature of 26 to 28 degrees. Don't forget to put a thermometer next to it. My apartment usually has this temperature on the kitchen cabinets under the ceiling. That's it. Watch the following video with the result of the experiment! Thank you for watching! See you again! #Howtogerminatepepperseeds
