A Masterpiece Models 'O' Gauge Rebuilt 'West Country' Class Light Pacific model locomotive No. 34037 'Clovelly' is shown operating at slow speed on a short length of test track. This film was taken using a high-resolution digital video camera. These are superb and exquisitely detailed models built by expert craftsmen in South Korea and the workmanship is fantastic! The remarkably authentic digital sound files were provided by Bryan Robertson and the model was being operated using a Digitrax Super Chief Xtra DCC controller so that fine speed control and the full range of the sound effects were available. A small auxiliary motor controls forward and reverse gear selection depending on the direction of travel and all of the lights may be controlled independently. A crew has not yet been fitted so it is possible to see some of the internal cab-fittings as the locomotive passes by the camera. With thanks to Michael Brooks and latterly John Borkowski of Masterpiece Models for procuring this beautiful model. The full sized prototype was one of the final Bulleids to be withdrawn on 9th July 1967, by which time a 4,500 gallon tender had been attached according to contemporary photographic reference material. The nameplates would have been removed by then to prevent theft although the backing plates were still in situ. Not surprisingly the real locomotive would have been nowhere near as clean as this miniature representation! No fewer that 20 Light Pacifics have survived into preservation, half in original air-smoothed casing and the rest rebuilds. None of these were late withdrawals except for No. 34023 'Blackmore Vale, all bar two (34023 and 34051 'Winston Churchill') having been rescued from the scrapyard at Barry Docks. Amazingly a significant majority of these survivors have now been steamed again in preservation. A Golden Age Models Rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' Class model may be seen in the background.
