Adhesives and Sealants are essential chemical bonding agents used to join materials and protect joints from environmental infiltration. Adhesives are primarily engineered to provide structural strength by bonding two surfaces together through adhesion (sticking to the surface) and cohesion (internal strength), often replacing mechanical fasteners like nails or screws to create a seamless finish. Sealants, while also possessing adhesive properties, are specifically designed to be flexible and "fill gaps" to prevent the passage of air, water, or dust. While an adhesive’s main job is to hold a load, a sealant’s main job is to accommodate movement—such as thermal expansion—while maintaining a watertight barrier, making both indispensable for the airtightness and structural integrity of modern building envelopes.
