(15 May 2020) Residents in Madrid took to the streets on Thursday for a fifth night running to protest against the government's handling of the coronavirus outbreak and lockdown. The protest, located in Madrid's most exclusive neighborhoods "Golden Mile", started just before 2100 local time (1900 GMT). Banging saucepans and blowing whistles, protesters demanded the resignation of Socialist Party leader and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Spanish police tried to keep protesters moving and demanded over recorded announcements to keep the required social distance. Madrid has been Spain's worse hit region throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, with over 8,750 deaths registered so far, a total of 27,321 people have died in Spain due to the virus according to government figures. The protesters blame Pedro Sánchez and his left-wing coalition government for poor preparation in the weeks before the outbreak hit and for damaging the economy during Spain's prolonged lockdown period which is now 2 months. Various regions and provinces of Spain are now seeing a slow relaxation of the lockdown but both Madrid and Barcelona are not expected to see any changes in the coming week.
