If you’re feeling mired in the quest for Crafting Perfection, then this video’s for you. Whether it's perfect stitches, a perfect fit, the perfect garment… perfectionism can be an asset, and it can be a giant liability, and it all comes down to who you are, and how you handle it. “Perfect” garments aren’t possible, but if you want to improve your sewing, the best way is to practice. To accept that mistakes will be made, and to accept them as part of the learning process. Take steps to minimize the damage of those mistakes when possible, and then just pick up and carry on, bringing with you the lessons you learned. Let’s look at WHY we sew, to remind ourselves why we got into this, and how perfectionism can be in direct opposition to those goals. Let’s examine what perfectionism is, and some of the reasons it can manifest itself. What factors in our lives (shocker, mainly social media and comparison of ourselves to others) can make it worse? Why can sewing be a perfect target for those of us with perfectionist tendencies, and in particular, historical sewists… (*side eyes at the concept of Historical Accuracy and the havoc it wreaks*). And finally, let’s consider some ways to tackle it.
