UNODC is supporting Kenya’s National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) to promote more active and realistic use of bail and bond. Since 2018, this has involved assisting its Bail and Bond Implementation Committee, chaired by High Court Judge Lady Justice Jessie Lesiit, with the development of bail and bond training instruments, a suite of information materials and staging of vital training-of-trainers’ workshops for the justice sector. UNODC’s support is through the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery in Kenya (PLEAD), a partnership involving the Government of Kenya, European Union, United Nations and civil society that is improving the delivery of justice services, settlement of disputes and use of alternatives to imprisonment. The partnership is funded by the European Union. The committee completed its term in February, marked by a High-Level Dialogue on Bail and Bond held in Nairobi. This video features Lady Justice Lesiit discussing the committee’s outputs and highlighting the importance of bail and bond and emphasizing that bail and bond is a Constitutional right for all Kenyans.
